Garnet Tennis Downs Gettysburg 8-1, Falls to Williams 8-1

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - It was an even split for the Swarthmore College men's tennis team (4-7, 3-0) on Saturday afternoon, as Swat dominated  Centennial Conference rival Gettysburg 8-1, but  lost to long-time rival Williams College by the same score from the Faulkner Courts at the College.

Kelm finished with No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles wins against Gettysburg.

Sophomores Stephen Youngblood and Zak Kelm bounced back from a defeat on Wednesday at Muhlenberg to kick things off for Swarthmore against Gettysburg. Swarthmore would continue to roll, finishing with an 8-1 victory over the bullets.

Swarthmore took all six singles matches, highlighted by dominant performances by Max Bressman and James Wieler who only dropped two games apiece.

Stephen Youngblood in the number one slot won a tough match against Chris Curran of Gettysburg 6-4, 6-4.

The 8-1 margin continues a three year streak for the Garnet during which they’ve beaten Gettysburg 9-0, 8-1, and 8-1.

Swarthmore could not match their dominance against a tough Williams squad who took care of the Garnet 8-1.  It was their second loss to a NESCAC opponent this season, having already fell to Amherst.

Swarthmore’s sophomore Zak Kelm secured the lone victory for the Garnet in the second singles slot and Sophomore Stephen Youngblood fell just short of topping Williams’ All-NESCAC played Junior Nick Lebedoff in the #1 space. Youngblood came back in the second set to force a tiebreaker where he was eventually overtaken.

The Garnet are follow up their doubleheader with a Centennial Conference match-up at Washington College on Tuesday.
