Winning Streak Ends as Mules Defeat Garnet Baseball 17-3

BOX SCORE

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team (11-7, 3-1)  saw its eight-game winning streak come to end on Sunday afternoon, as Muhlenberg scored six runs in the sixth inning and eight runs in the eighth inning en route to a 17-3 victory over the Garnet  from historic Limeport Stadium.

The loss is the Garnet's first in Centennial Conference play for the 2010 season.

Sophomore Spencer Ross blasted his fourth home run of the season in the fourth inning to pace the Garnet offense.

Ross hit his fourth homer of the season.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Swat struck back with two runs - thanks to a two-run blast over the left-field fence from Ross - in the top of the fourth to tie the game 2-2.

Muhlenberg stuck back  in fifth inning, taking the lead thanks to a two-out RBI double from  Brian Beck to left center off of Swarthmore start Andy Allen.

After shutting down the Swat offense in the top of sixth, the Mules offense exploded in the bottom of the sixth - producing six runs on five hits while chasing Allen from the game putting game out of reach.  Muhlenberg's  Clint Lynch got the inning started with a lead-foff solo home run, while Jesse Nusbaum doubled three batters later off of Swarthmore reliever Adam Koshkin to do  most of the damage.

Swarthmore added a run in the top of seventh thanks an RBI fielder's choice from junior Ben Schneiderman, but there was no slowing the Muhlenberg offense late in the game, as the Mules added eight more in the eighth inning en route to the 17-3 win.

Allen (1-1) took the loss for Swat, allowing four earned runs over 5.1 innings of work with two strikeouts.

Sophomore Miles Santo finished the game with two singles, while senior Jimmy Gill, senior Wiley Archibald and sophomore Anthony Montalbano all hit safely.

Swarthmore was hampered by five errors in the game.

The Garnet return to action with a trip to Washington on Wednesday (3:30).
