Vachal Nets 100th Career Goal as Swat Lax Defeats Immaculata 17-6
IMMACULATA, Pa. - Sophomore Annelise Mowry scored four goals and added two assists, while junior Amy Vachal scored four goals - including the 100th of her career - to lead the Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team (4-1, 0-1) to a convincing 17-6 win over Immaculata (1-6) on Tuesday evening.
Vachal is just the 13th student-athlete in program history to reach 100 career goals and her 119 career points ranks in the Top 20 of the all-time list.
Sophomore Marie Mutryn also added a hat trick, while freshman Nicole Vanchieri netted two goals to lead the explosive Garnet offense which has scored at least 17 goals in two of its last three games.
Senior Abbe Muller added a goal and assist, while junior Emily Evans, sophomore Phoebe Hansen and sophomore Lara Hasychak all found the back of the net.
After a goal from Immaculata's Lauren Bigos tied the game 1-1 at the 18:26 remaining in the first half, the Swarthmore struck back with vengeance, scoring six unanswered goals to take control of the game. Mowry led the way with three of her four goals during the surge and Vanchieri's goal with 11:14 left in the half gave Swat a 7-1 lead. The Garnet would add two more goals in the period, taking a 9-2 lead into the half and never looking back.
In goal for Swat, senior Allison Grein made seven saves to pick up the win.
Swarthmore finished with advantages in shots (43-18) and ground balls (17-13)
The Garnet return home on Thursday for a match-up with Gwynedd-Mercy. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. and can be viewed on the Garnet Sports Network.
