With Bat and Glove, Scheirer Leads Swat Softball to Split With Cabrini
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Junior Krista Scheirer got it done with her bat and with her glove, blasting a solo home run in the fifth inning while igniting a game-ending double play at shortstop to lead the Swarthmore College softball team (7-9) to an exciting 6-5 victory over visiting Cabrini in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon from Clothier Field. The Cavaliers (7-5) won the first game 12-1 in five innings.
The Garnet built a commanding 4-0 lead in the second game, thanks in part to a four-hit, three-run third inning fueled by RBI's from freshman Danielle Seltzer and Scheirer.
With freshman Isabel Sanchez in full control on the mound, Swat maintained the 4-0 until the offense struck again in the fifth inning. Scheirer got it started with a leadoff solo home run over the left-fielder fence, extending the lead to 5-0. Three batters later following singles from Allie Coleman and freshman Katie Teleky, freshman Katie Smayda doubled down the left-field line, bringing home Coleman to make it a 6-0 Swat advantage.
Still, the Cavaliers had plenty of fight left, scoring three runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning, trimming the lead to 6-3 before making one final charge in the seventh.
With the bases loaded and just one out, Cabrini's Ryan McDonough laced a two-RBI single up the middle, cutting the lead to 6-5 and putting the tying run at second base. But the rally ended on the very next play, as Cabrini's Kerri MacNeal lined out to Scheirer at shortstop, who alertly fired to second base - beating the runner back to the bag for the game-ending double play.
Sanchez picked up her fourth win as a member of the Garnet, allowing four earned runs over seven innings while striking out two.
Smayda and Teleky each finished with two hits in the second game.
In the first game, two home runs from Cabrini's Angela Shookster and a seven-run fourth inning were more than enough, as the Cavaliers defeated the Garnet 12-1 in five innings.
Seltzer paced the Garnet offense with two hits, while freshman Emily Richardson added an RBI single.
Smayda (2-4) took the loss on the mound, allowing five earned runs over four innings.
The Garnet return to action on Thursday with a home tilt with Widener. The 320 Challenge game will begin at 3:00.
