Wesleyan Outlasts Garnet for Twinbill Sweep
GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Swarthmore College baseball team's impressive start to the 2010 start came to halt on Wednesday afternoon in the desert, as the Garnet (3-2) were swept by unbeaten Wesleyan 18-9 and 7-4 from Desert Edge High School.
Swat's loss in the second half of the doubleheader was a particularly tough defeat, as the Cardinals (5-0) rallied from down 3-1 in fifth inning of the seven inning contest, while sophomore Spencer Ross saw his potential game-tying three-run home run robbed by a spectacular catch by the Wesleyan right-fielder Brice Kelly off the wall.
Jensen went five innings in the Garnet's 7-4 loss in Game 2.
Ross finished the doubleheader with two home runs, while sophomore Mike Cameron added a three-run homer in the first game.
Game 1
The Cardinals jumped all over the Garnet from the opening pitch, building an 11-0 lead after three innings en route to the 18-9 win.
Despite the early deficit, the Swat bats did come to life in the second half of the game, led by home runs from Ross (third inning) and Cameron (fourth inning).
Cameron finished the game with three hits and three runs batted in, while senior Wiley Archibald knocked in three as well. Sophomore Mike Waterhouse added two hits. Sophomore Zach Weiner took the loss, allowing six earned runs in 2.2 innings of work.
Game 2
Wesleyan right fielder Brice Kelly made a spectacaualr game-saving catch of a possible game-tying home run Spencer Ross to spell heartbreak for the Garnet, who saw the Cardinals rally for a 7-4 win in the second game of the doubleheader.
Despite blowing a 3-1 late-inning lead, the Garnet had one final chance to tie game in the top of the seventh inning. Singles from Archibald and Waterhouse brought Ross - who homered the previous inning - to the plate with one final chance to tie the game. He connected on a 300-foot bomb to right field, but Kelly made a leaping catch directly into the wall to preserve the wild win for the Cardinals.
Swat took the lead in the fourth inning. A sacrifice fly from Thomas Nakamura brought home Ross while senior Jimmy Gill came home on a perfectly executed double-steal with freshman Rory McTear, giving the Garnet a 3-1 lead.
Wesleyan had the answer in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four runs - thanks in no small part to a bases-clearing triple from David Skura that just got over the head of centerfielder Ben Schneiderman.
Freshman Dylan Jensen (0-1) pitched well in defeat, allowing four runs in five innings with three strikeouts.
