Swarthmore Men Drown Ursinus 131-71; Women Lose Heartbreaker 106-99
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore men's swimming team (2-3, 2-1) dominated visiting Ursinus 131-71, while the women's competition (2-3, 1-2) came down to the final race, but the Garnet finished just short in a 106-99 loss on Tuesday evening from Ware Pool.
Freshman Jake Benveniste and Tyler Hanson solidified the win for the men after going one and two in the 500-yard freestyle with times of 4:56.25 and 4:56.88 respectively. The win gave the Garnet 111 points to lock in the 131-71 victory.
The Garnet got out to an early lead with the help of the 400-yard medley relay team comprised of junior Sterling Satterfield, sophomore Tim Brevart and freshmen Daniel Duncan and Roger Chin. They touched the wall in 3:42.78 for a quick 11 points. Swarthmore also finished three and four in the relay.
Swarthmore owned the Bears in 50 and 100-yard freestyle events going one and two in the 50 and snagging the top three spots in the 100. Brevart touched first in the 50 (22.82) closely followed by sophomore Lance Liu.
In the 100 free, sophomore Neil Palmer (50.36), Brevart (50.85), and senior Michael Ahn (50.90) clocked in almost simultaneously for the all-Garnet finish.
The women grew a nice lead after clocking in the top three times in the 200-yard IM and the 200-yard butterfly. In the 200 IM, senior Casey Osborn led the pack with a time of 2:19.67 followed by sophomore Rosalie Lawrence (2:20.20) and junior Stephanie Su (2:21.98). Freshman Hannah Gotwals (2:16.51), Osborn (2:21.43) and sophomore Naomi Glassman (2:21.63) topped the 200 fly.
Senior Anne Miller continued her dominance with three first place touches in the 1000-yard free (10:53.35), the 200-yard free (2:02.76) and the 500-yard free (5:22.25).
The women were up 95-92 going into the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, but came up short as the Bears touched first and third to take the victory 106-99.
The men and women will dive back into the pool on December 4th and 5th as they host the Swat Invite. Swimming begins at 6 PM on the 4th and 9:30 AM on the 5th.
