Stockbower, Bodur Light Up Scoreboard, But Garnet Lose 94-85 Shootout to Dickinson

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Junior Kathryn Stockbower scored 32 points and pulled down 15 rebounds while junior Ceylan Bodur netted a career-high 30 points, but a 55 point second-half outburst from visiting Dickinson was enough to give the Red Devils a 94-85 victory on Tuesday evening from Tarble Pavilion.

The Centennial Conference opener for both squads turned into a shootout from the opening whistle. Alesha Sisco scored 24 points to lead a balanced Red Devil offense that saw teammates Carole Dempsey, Belma Mekic and Brooke Muller all score 14 points each. The Garnet (1-2, 0-1) shot a blistering 62% for the game, but were done in by 27 turnovers - compared to just five for the Red Devils. Dickinson (3-0, 1-0) put the full-court press on the Garnet from start to finish; resulting in 17 steals from seven different players.

The Garnet built a five-point halftime lead thanks to superb shooting - 63% for the half - and the play of Bodur. The junior guard was nearly unguardable in the first half - scoring 19 of her career-high 30 points on 7-of-8 shooting, giving the Garnet a 44-39 edge heading into the locker room.

In the second half, Swarthmore saw inspired play from Stockbower - who scored 22 points in the second stanza - but the Red Devils' press finally got the best of the Garnet, creating 17 second-half turnovers that fueled Dickinson's 55 point  half.

Swarthmore maintained a 51-44 lead with 16:11 remaining in the game, but the Red Devils would take their first lead since the opening minutes with a three-pointer from Jessica Hughes at the 14:04 mark, making it a 56-54 contest.

With game tied 60-60 at the 12:10 mark, the Red Devils - fueled by eight Swarthmore turnovers - would go on a 19-5 run over the next five minutes to seize momentum and put the game out of reach.

Freshman Madeline Ross scored 10 points for the Garnet - her second consecutive game in double-figures.

Stockbower finished with her third double-double of the season and 45th of her career. Her 32 points is two shy of her 34-point career high - which she scored against Washington College (1/22/08). That performance also marked the last time a member of the Garnet had scored 30 points in a game.

Swarthmore returns to action on Tuesday, December 1 , with a trip to McDaniel. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
