Volleyball Loses Tough Conference Showdown to Franklin & Marshall 3-1
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Garnet (18-9, 6-4 CC) volleyball team suffered a tough 3-1 loss to a visiting Franklin & Marshall squad Saturday afternoon to round out their regular season play. Sophomore Genny Pezzola had 11 kills and 29 digs but still remains three kills away from the Jen Wang's single season record of 361.
F&M came out of the gates fast on Saturday afternoon putting away the first two sets 25-18 and 25-17 as the Garnet looked asleep. Swarthmore woke up fast in the set three as they battled back and forth with the Diplomats to win 25-21 and keep the match going to a fourth set.
Set four looked to be over to quickly for the Garnet as Franklin & Marshall built an early 12-2 lead. A few short rallies later Swarthmore was back in it and eventually tying the game at 20-20. Unfortunately it just wasn't enough to get them to an overtime set as the Diplomats won set four 25-22 and won their ninth Centennial Conference match.
Swarthmore Seniors Kearney Bangs and Johanna Bond led the Garnet in their last regular season home match. Bangs finished with 18 assists and six digs while Bond had six kills and 13 digs.
Freshmen Allie Coleman anchored the Garnet offense with 27 assists while fellow freshman Kat Montemurro punched in 14 kills.
The Garnet will host its first round Centennial Conference playoff game on Wednesday November 4th against Muhlenberg. Play is slated to begin at 7 PM.
