Kelm Reaches Quarterfinals at ITA Southeast Regional

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Zak Kelm advanced to the quarterfinals in the men's championship singles draw of the ITA Southeast Regionals over the weekend from the University of Mary Washington.


Kelm defeated Will Garrett 6-1; 6-3 in the round of 64, Will Hall 4-6; 7-5; 6-3 in the round of 32 and Daniel Valverde 4-6; 7-6(11);6-1 to put him into the quarterfinals.  Kelm's quest for a championship fell short when he lost to Hayden White 6-2; 6-1.

In doubles play freshman Seth Udelson and sophomore Stephen Youngblood also made run this weekend. Udelson and Youngblood lost their first match-up of the weekend before they fought their way back to the consolation semifinals.  They downed Connor and Sison 8-4 in round one and toppled Caulfield and Sergay 8-0 in the consolation quarterfinals before getting losing a tough match to Cranford and Papen 8-3.

After facing off against the stiff tournament competition the Garnet were given a perspective of what is in store for them as the season continues.  Swarthmore will be back in action on Saturday October 10th when it hosts Amherst.
