Tennis Opens Fall Season At Swarthmore Invitational

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Facing fierce competition against Division I Deleware  and conference-rival Johns Hopkins ,  the  Swarthmore men's tennis team opened up the 2009 fall campaign with the Swarthmore Invitational, highlighted by an impressive doubles victory by junior Mark Wee and sophomore Max Bressman over highly-ranked David Maldow and Andrew Wang of Johns Hopkins.

Wee - along with sophomore Max Bressman - defeated the highly-ranked pair from Johns Hopkins.

The young Garnet - comprised mostly of underclassmen - failed to advance any individuals to flight finals, yet there was plenty of good to take away from the opening tournament of the year.

“It was great to be able to come out with a win in doubles, and despite our less than stellar performance as a team, we’re really just hoping that our younger players are gaining experience to help us in the upcoming season,”  said Wee.

Sophomore Zak Kelm also brought inspiration to the team as he almost took a set away from the No. 9 ranked player in JHU's David Maldow.  “I felt pretty good about the way things turned out.  It would have been great to be able to close it out but all I can say is I really enjoyed myself this weekend."

The Garnet will be back in action two weekends from now and then play Amherst on Saturday, October 10.
