No. 15 Garnet Shut Down No. 25 Dickinson 1-0
SWARTHMORE, Pa. – For the first time in Centennial Conference history, two nationally ranked teams squared off – and this one went to the No. 15 Garnet. Swarthmore (6-1) scored in 17th minute of the first half with a goal off the foot of sophomore Hannah Deming and the Garnet defense fended off the Dickinson attack for the 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon from Clothier Field Stadium.
The Garnet had some close calls to start the first half when the No. 25 Dickinson Red Devils had a shot at an empty net. Sophomore Hanna Purkey stepped in to save the day for Swarthmore and keep the game scoreless. Then in the 17th minute, sophomore Hannah Deming would put the Garnet on the board with a rebounded shot off of Dickinson keeper Kailyn Hartmann. The goal marked the first allowed by Dickinson all season.
Swarthmore put on a defensive clinic in the second half led by sophomore keeper Marie Mutryn. The Dickinson attack was at full force and pressing Swarthmore throughout the entire half. Mutryn thwarted the Red Devil attack with 7 saves in the game including a clutch save taken from inside the six that sealed the victory for the Garnet.
The Garnet hit the pitch again on Thursday September 26th when they travel to local rival Widener. Play will begin at 7 PM.
