Peterson Nets Game-Winning Goal as Garnet Defeat Elizabethtown 1-0 in Overtime
SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior Kirsten Peterson knocked home the game-winning in the final minute of the first overtime as the No. 23 Swarthmore College women’s soccer team (5-0) defeated Elizabethtown 1-0 in thrilling fashion to remain unbeaten on the season.
With less than one minute remaining in the first overtime, Peterson rocketed a shot from the left wing past Elizabethtown goalkeeper Kristen Kelly after being set up perfectly on the assist from senior midfielder Julia Luongo. The Garnet offense struggled to put pressure on the Blue Jay defense for the most of the game, but converted on its chance when it mattered the most.
Sophomore goalkeeper Marie Mutryn was outstanding for the Garnet in the net. She recorded seven saves for the game, including six in the first half alone and several from point-blank range that kept the Garnet in the game.
The Blue Jay attack pressured the Garnet defense throughout the first half, but thanks to efforts of Mutyrn, the game would remain tied 0-0 heading into the halftime break.
Elizabethtown appeared to take the lead in the 63rd minute Kelsey Boehmer's shot found the back of the back of the net on a counterattack, but an offside call would negate the goal and the game remained scoreless. The Garnet also had three excellent scoring opportunities taking away by offside calls.
The 5-0 start equals the best start for the women's soccer team since the 2007 squad began the year at 6-0.
The Garnet return to action on Wednesday, September 16, when it hosts No. 17 College of New Jersey. Action is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
