Wallwork Shines at Day One of Swarthmore Invitational

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior Rachel Wallwork finished 2-0 in singles play while freshmen Emily Rosenblum, Kelsey Johnson and Tayler Tucker also picked up singles victories to lead the host Swarthmore women’s tennis team at the season-opening Swarthmore Invitational.

Wallwork, the two-time Centennial Conference Player of the Year, defeated conference rivals Jaclyn Porter of Haverford 6-0, 6-1 and Anita Bhamidipati of Johns Hopkins to move into the Flight A singles final round on Sunday.

Rosenblum, Johnson and Tucker all dropped their first matches, but each rebounded in the consolation rounds. Rosenblum topped Karen Lavi of Haverford 6-1, 6-2 and Johnson defeated Haverford’s Fumiko Shogase 6-3, 7-6 (0) in Flight A singles, while Tucker dropped Haverfords’s Liz Gallo  6-0, 6-0 in Flight C singles.

In doubles play, the pair of Rosenblum and Wallwork finished 1-1 in Flight A action, topping Shogase/ Porter of Haverford 8-1 but falling to Delaware’s Elena Berry and Montserrat Ripoll 8-6. The Swat duo of sophomore Rosie DuBrin and freshman Alice Laughlin dropped a pair of matches on the day, falling to Delaware’s Ivana Petrich and Amanda Halstrom (8-2 ) and Haverford’s Lavi/Bradley (8-4).

In Flight B doubles, the freshmen pair of Dina Zingaro and Johnson split a pair of matches to reach tomorrow’s consolation finals, falling to Johns Hopkins’ duo of Hirase/Charubhumi(JHU) but defeating Haverford’s pair of Gallo/Silverstein 8-0.

The final round of the Swarthmore Invitational will take place Sunday morning.
