Swarthmore Continues Success in Tournament Play at the Garnet Classic
SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College volleyball team (5-2) kept the ball rolling at the 7th Annual Garnet Classic, as the Garnet earned a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon, topping Albright College 3-1 and Wesley College 3-0. Sophomore Genny Pezzola and freshman Kat Montemurro led the Garnet on offense with a combined 40 kills for the day.
Swarthmore started the day out with a hard fought battle with the Albright Lions that ended with a 3-1 demise of Albright. Pezzola had 14 kills and Montemurra finished with 12 to lead the Garnet attack. Sophomore Lisa Shang played brilliantly with 26 digs that held Swarthmore’s defense together. For Albright, Danielle Ozment had 11 kills and 20 digs while teammate Lauren Higgins had 28 assists in the attempt to pull off the upset.
With momentum on the side of the Garnet, their attack got only better in game two. Swarthmore faced off against Wesley College for the second time in a week. The result was the same; Swarthmore downed the Wolverines in three games, 25-21, 25-10 and 25-12. Pezzola, back at it again, led the team with 10 kills and nine digs. Senior Kearny Bangs and freshman Allie Coleman helped topple the Wolverines with 19 assists to keep the pace of the fierce Garnet attack.
The Garnet will be back in action on day two of the Garnet Classic tomorrow, September 13 at 9 a.m.
