Garnet Capture Second Place at Greyhound Premier
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Swarthmore volleyball took second place at Greyhound Premier after splitting a pair of games on Saturday afternoon, toppling host Moravian 3-1 but falling to conference-rival Franklin & Marshall 3-0. Sophomore Genny Pezzola and freshman Kathryn Montemurro were honored for their outstanding play all weekend with selections to the All-Tournament Team.
In a rematch from earlier this week with Moravian, the Garnet lost the first game in a close battle 26-24 but would rebound quickly taking the next three games 25-21, 25-15 and 25-18, avenging Tuesdays match.
Pezzola played a spectacular game for the Garnet posting 23 kills. Montemurro and Senior Johanna Bond generated nine kills apiece while freshman Ally Coleman supported the attack with 43 assists. Defense played a large part in Swarthmore’s success. Pezzola had 28 digs along with sophomore Lisa Shang with 15 and Coleman with 9.
The day didn’t start the way the Garnet would have liked when they faced off against the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. The Diplomats won in three games 25-19, 25-17 and 25-19. Senior Kearny Bangs kept the Garnet alive with 21 assists while Pezzola and Montemurro combined for 15 kills. Pezzola also finished the match with 14 digs.
