Garnet Cruise to 6-1 Victory Over Baptist Bible at Swat Kick Classic
SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior Taylor Rhodes scored two goals, while senior Julia Luongo, junior Megan Colombo, junior Kirsten Peterson, and freshman Isabelle Newlin each contributed a goal as the Swarthmore women’s soccer team (2-0) completely overwhelmed visiting Bible Baptist 6-1 on Saturday afternoon from Clothier Field.
The victory continues the Garnet’s recent domination of the field in the Swat Kick Class. The 6-1 win against Baptist Bible ties the largest margin of victory for the Garnet in the Swat Kick Classic and extends the Garnet’s tournament winning streak to seven games, dating back to 2005.
On a picture-perfect late summer afternoon, the Garnet played a game that was just as beautiful. Dominating nearly every facet of the game, Swarthmore owned a 37-2 shot advantge, 16-1 advantage in shots on goal while never really being challenged by the Defenders.
Colombo got the scoring attack started in the 13th minute with a point blank goal from the center of the box – set up by an assist from Luongo - making the score 1-0. Just three minutes later, Rhodes crossed over a defender in the box and drove the ball into the back of the net to make the score 2-0.
The game would remain 2-0 for the next 35 minutes, until a flurry of Garnet goals put the contest out of reach. Luongo ripped a penalty kick into the goal to make it 3-0 and four minutes later, Peterson secured the ball from a blocked shot and put the ball in the back of the net, extending the lead to 4-0. On the very nextnext possession, Rhodes juked a defender in the box and cleanly scored her second goal of the afternoon, bringing the score to 5-0 in the 58th minute.
The final nail came in the 81st minute when newcomer Newlin scored a goal after being perfectly set up in the center of the box by fellow freshman Anna Rothschild.
The lone goal for the Defenders came on a Sandy Richie penalty kick in the final minute of play. Starting goalkeeper Melanie Williams made 10 saves between the pipes.
The Garnet return to action tomorrow at noon when they face Albright in the finale of the Swat Kick Classic.
