Swarthmore Softball Trio Named All-Centennial
LANCASTER, Pa. -- Swarthmore senior Lauren Walker, junior Kathryn Riley and sophomore Krista Scheirer were selected to the All-Centennial Conference softball team, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Riley (Dagsboro, Del. / Indian River) , a utility player, was a first-team selection for the third straight year while Scheirer (Norristown, Pa. / Germantown Academy) , a first baseman, and Walker (Fallston, Md. / The Hotchkiss School [CT]), an outfielder, were named to the second team.
Riley (right), a team captain, continued her illustrious hitting at Swarthmore, posting career-highs for batting average (.420), runs (23), walks (16) and on-base percentage (.500) while seeing action at designated player, pitcher, third base and first base. She ranked second in the Centennial for on-base percentage and second in batting average while getting in the top-10 in three other offensive categories.
Riley is the first Swarthmore softball player to earn first-team honors three times and the 12th in Centennial history.
Walker (left), also a team captain, hit .326 in 16 Centennial games this season while tying for the Conference lead with seven stolen bases. She concludes her four-year career as one of the top Centennial base thieves, swiping 55 bases in 60 attempts (good for a tie for sixth all-time in the Conference). The fleet centerfielder also tied for the top defensive honors, making just one error in 49 chances (.980 percentage).
This is the second All-Centennial selection for Walker in 2008-09; she was an All-Centennial first-team goalkeeper for the Garnet women’s soccer team. Walker has four total All-Conference selections in her career, having earned nods for soccer in 2006, ’07 and ’08.
Scheirer makes All-Centennial for the first time in her career. She brought a powerful bat to the middle of the Garnet line-up, posting career-highs in home runs (two), doubles (nine), RBIs (19) total bases (39) and slugging percentage (.433). In the Centennial, the sophomore ranked in the top-10 for doubles and hit-by-pitches (three). Scheirer (right) earned her second selection to the Conference Academic Honor Roll; she also made an appearance in the fall as a member of the Garnet field hockey team.
This is the third time in four years Swarthmore has placed three players on the All-Conference team (11 total selections).
