Bears Sweep Garnet
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Ursinus baseball team closed up the season series against Swarthmore with a 12-4 win at the Clothier Fields on a sunny Friday afternoon.
The Bears (18-18-1, 9-3 CC) got off to a hungry start scoring three runs in the top of the first. After three scoreless innings Ursinus added two more runs in the fifth pushing the score to 3-0.
In the bottom of the fifth Swarthmore (9-20, 1-11 CC) started with a solo homer from designated hitter Miles Santo ’12 (Middletown, N.J. / Middletown South). Senior Conor Casey (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) singled up the middle for his 26th hit of the season and was advanced to second as sophomore Ben Schneiderman (Easton, Pa. / Easton) grounded out to the pitcher with a bunt. Freshman infielder Mike Waterhouse (Weston, Conn. / Weston) picked-up a single before the promising rally was cut short as the inning ended in a double play.
The Garnet had one run in the bottom of the sixth coming off a single to right field from junior right fielder Jimmy Gill (Lewes, Del. / Cape Henlopen) who drove in classmate Wiley Archibald (Berkley, Calif. / The College Prep).
Ursinus opened their lead to ten (12-2) ahead Swarthmore off of five hits in the top of the eighth inning. Swarthmore put up two runs in the bottom trying for a rally making the score 12-4 in favor of the Bears.
Freshman Kyle Crawford (2-5) (Mississuga, ON, Canada / Cawthra Park School) pitched six innings taking the loss for the Garnet as he struck out four batters.
The Garnet will travel tomorrow to Lancaster, Pa. taking on the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. The double header is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
