Garnet Fall Short to Bears

COLLEGVILLE, Pa. -- The Ursinus baseball team picked-up a 4-2 win over Swarthmore on Thursday afternoon in Centennial Conference baseball action.

The Bears improved to a 17-8-1 overall record and 8-3 in league play as the Garnet fell to 9-19, 1-10 CC.

Swarthmore centerfielder Ben Schniederman ’11 (Easton, Pa. / Easton) put the Garnet on the board with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home classmate James Bernard (Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select). At the end of the fifth inning the score was 5-1, Ursinus.

After three scoreless frames, Swarthmore hoped for a rally inning in the top of the ninth. Junior first baseman Wiley Archibald (Berkeley, Calif. / The College Preparatory School) singled to the short stop and was advanced to second with a single to right field from senior Conor Casey (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell). Freshman Mike Waterhouse (Weston, Conn. / Weston), who went 3-for-3 on the afternoon drove in a run off a single to right field. Schneiderman was walked to load the bases but freshman Matt Lamb (Pacific Palisades, Calif. / Loyola) grounded out into a double play to end the game.

Freshman Zach Weiner (Baltimore, Md. / McDonogh School) (0-1) pitching five innings taking the loss before three other Garnet pitchers headed to the mound in relief.

The two teams will rematch tomorrow afternoon at the Clothier Fields on the campus of Swarthmore College. First pitch is schedule for 3:30 p.m.
