Shorewomen Swamp Garnet

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The visiting Washington College Shorewomen earned a 15-7 Centennial Conference win over the Swarthmore Garnet women's lacrosse team early Thursday evening at a chilly Clothier Field.

Swarthmore (9-7, 1-7 CC) sophomore Amy Vachal (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) scored in the first minute as she drove down the middle of the arch notching her first goal of the game.

Washington (7-7, 2-6 CC) made the score one-one with 22:34 left on the clock before Vachal scored her 45th goal of the season pushing the Garnet ahead one. In just four minutes the Shorewomen notched four goals extending their lead to 5-2.

Vachal halted the Shorewomen’s run with 12 minutes left in the half registering her eighth hat trick of the season.

Washington scored an additional two goals to make the score 7-3 in their favor.

The half was closed with 36 seconds remaining as Vachal knocked off her fourth goal of the evening after being fouled just outside the eight-meter arch.

Washington outscored the Garnet 8-3 in the second half to secure their Conference win. Swarthmore had a pair of goals from freshman midfielder Marie Mutryn (Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna) and one from sophomore midfielder Emily Evans (Atlanta, Ga. / North Springs).

The Garnet posted a season high 14 caused turnovers and gobbled up 19 ground balls this evening, the team was led by senior defender Melissa Grigsby (West Chester, Pa. / West Chester East) who forced four Washington turnovers and collected four ground balls.

Sophomore goalie Jean Dahlquist (Wauwatosa, Wis. / Milwaukee Arts) registered her second game in a row in the net for the Garnet stopping five shots from going into the net and collecting two ground balls.

The Garnet will travel on their final road trip of the regular season to Carlisle, Pa. to face Dickinson College. The Centennial Conference contest is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
