Tough Day at Shore for Garnet Softball
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Garnet sophomore infielder Lauren Marczi had three hits and righthander Kathryn Riley '10 posted seven strikeouts as Swarthmore dropped a pair of close decisions at Washington College in Centennial softball action Thursday afternoon.
The Shorewomen (10-16-1, 2-9-1 CC) used an unearned run to squeak out a 1-0 win in game one and then benefited from a few more Swarthmore miscues in the nightcap, earning a 4-1 victory over the Garnet (11-16, 1-7 CC).
Riley (Dagsboro, Del. / Indian River) spread four hits over 6.0 innings in the circle, walking one batter before suffering the hard-luck defeat (7-6). The Swarthmore offense, seeing live action for the first time in a week, was non-existent in the first game, accounting for just two hits against Washington hurler Emily Adams (7-8).
Marczi (Chester, N.J. / West Morris) led the Garnet charge in the second game, singling up the middle in the third inning before tying the game, 1-1, by scoring on a double to left-center by Swarthmore catcher Kira Kern ’11 (Newtown Square, Pa. / Council Rock North). Marczi cracked a pair of doubles in her next two at-bats but was left stranded as Washington pitcher Meaghan Kimme kept Swarthmore off-balance, striking out five hitters in 7.0 innings to earn her third win of the season.
Swarthmore attempts to right the ship this weekend, traveling to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, April 18 for a 1:00 p.m. Centennial doubleheader before making up a postponed twinbill at Gettysburg on Sunday, April 19.
