What A Knight For Krista
ROYERSFORD, Pa. -- Garnet sophomore Krista Scheirer had three extra-base hits, including a two-run homer, and drove in two runs as Swarthmore split a pair of non-conference softball games at Arcadia Thursday afternoon.
Swarthmore (11-14) used three hits apiece from Scheirer (Norristown, Pa. / Germantown Academy) and classmate Kira Kern (Newtown Square, Pa. / Council Rock North) to claim a 5-1 win the second game.
Scheirer moved up to third on the team in slugging percentage (.493) following three hits in five at bats on the day. She doubled and scored in a three-run Swarthmore fourth inning and launched her second home run of the season in the fourth as the Garnet rallied from a 1-0 deficit.
Garnet captain Kathryn Riley ’10 (Dagsboro, Del. / Indian River) hurled 7.0 innings to improve to 7-5, allowing the one run (unearned) on five hits, striking out seven hitters.
Arcadia (21-5 overall) posted 13 hits, mixed in with three Swarthmore miscues, to pick up a quick 8-0 win in the first game. Kiersten Hughes picked up the victory for the Knights while Swarthmore freshman Marley Spector (Woodmere, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett) suffered her first loss of the season (1-1).
Riley was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game one while senior Alexandra Zelaski (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / Midpark) and sophomore Elizabeth Mills (San Diego, Calif. / The Bishop’s School) singled in their first collegiate at bats.
Swarthmore resumes Conference play this Saturday, welcoming Centennial rival McDaniel to Clothier Fields for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
