Knights Are No Match For The Garnet
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore women's lacrosse team got an early start in the 18-3 non-conference win over visiting Arcadia on Thursday evening at Clothier Field.
The Garnet improved to an overall record of 8-4 while the Knights fell to 2-8.
It was a career game for Garnet attack Annalise Mowry ’12 (Alpharetta, Ga. / Milton), who dished out three assists and notched two goals. Midfielders Amy Vachal '11 (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) and Marie Mutryn '12 (Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna) both added four goals apiece.
Swarthmore senior Marissa Schaffer (Moreland Hill, Ohio / Laurel School) knotted two goals in a one minute span, the second one off a feed from Mutryn.
After Arcadia scored the third goal of the game Swarthmore began a nine goal scoring streak and never looked back. Vachal drove into the goal beating a pair of Knight defenders to push the score to 4-1 with 16:46 left in the half. For her second assists on the evening Mutryn found fellow midfielder Emily Evans ’11 (Atlanta, Ga. / North Springs) in the fourteenth minute of the game.
To make the score 6-1 Vachal put home for her 40th goal of the season following a failed clear by Arcadia in which the Garnet took advantage of the extra possession.
After back-to-back goals from Mutryn the score became 9-1 as Vachal completed her eighth hat trick of the season as Mowry sent her a pass from behind the cage
As the second half started, Mutryn had another back-to-back goal series to finish off her six points on the day.
The score was pushed to 13-2 with 20:32 on the clock as Vachal found an open lane to send a shot past the Knight goalie for her fourth goal of the game. Senior defender Kelsey Hatzell (Havertown, Pa. / Havertown) rolled around the crease to make the score 14-2.
The final four Swarthmore goals were scored by Mowry and senior Melinda Petre (Columbia, Md. / Atholton) who both added two the Garnet total.
Junior goalie Allison Grein (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park) stopped six shots from hitting the net and collected five ground balls.
The Garnet will head up PA-476 this Saturday to Allentown, Pa. for a Centennial Conference contest against Muhlenberg College. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
