Swat Lax Runs Out of Wind
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore scored eight goals in the second half, falling just short of visiting Ursinus Bears. 10-9 victors of Centennial Conference women's lacrosse match Tuesday evening at Clothier Field.
Ursinus (4-8, 3-3 CC) started the game off scoring the first four goals. The run was propelled by freshman Alyssa Thren notching the first two, and Jenna Werley and Lindsay Urban followed with scores.
Garnet freshman Marie Mutryn (Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna) scored her first of three goals with 13:12 left in the first half.
The Bears' offense closed the final 12 minutes of the first half with four additional goals to push the score to 8-1 for the visitors.
Garnet goalie Allison Grein (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park) collected a handful of big saves in the second half. On the day, Grein stopped 11 shots and corralled five ground balls.
Also making waves in the second half was the Garnet offense, they jumped into the jet stream blowing across the pitch, getting within one goal of the Bears in the final two minutes.
Senior Anna de Regt (Redmond, Wash. / Overlake School) began the Garnet rally in the first minute of the half, notching her first of three goals on the evening.
Swarthmore attack Abbe Muller '10 (West Hartford, Conn. / Conard) started a three-goal run. With 22:41 on the clock, senior defender Kelsey Hatzell (Havertown, Pa. / Havertown) connected with Mutryn for her second goal of the night, before completing her hat-trick four minutes later.
The Bears pushed the score to 10-5 with a goal from Werley.
Swarthmore scored four straight goals in the final 12 minutes and saw sophomore midfielder Amy Vachal (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) notch her 38th goal of the season, extending her scoring streak to 17 games in a row.
The Garnet (7-4, 1-4 CC) will return to action on Clothier Field this Thursday, April 9th when they host non-conference foe Arcadia University. The first draw control is set for 7:00 p.m.
