Fords Squirrel Away Win

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Rival Haverford jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and never looked back, picking up a 13-4 win over the Garnet Tuesday afternoon in Centennial Conference baseball action at gusty Clothier Fields.

Haverford (12-10-1) got things started right away with two runs in the first off three hits. First baseman Jake Chaplin doubled to center and catcher Jeremy Zoll singled down the left field line in the inning

Swarthmore freshman Mike Waterhouse (Weston, Conn. / Weston) got on base following a walk and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. A single by freshman catcher Matt Lamb (Pacific Palisades, Calif. / Loyola) drove in Waterhouse--his 12th RBI of the season.

The Fords pushed the score to 5-1 in the second after senior centerfielder Dean Laganosky hit his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot to center.

Garnet shortstop Spencer Ross (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) got the bats started with a double down left line and advanced to third with Conor Casey'09 (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) single the push through the left side. Before the inning ended, Ross scored off a Haverford wild pitch to make the score 7-2.

Zoll drove in Laganoksy off a double up the middle for Haverford’s lone run in the sixth inning.

After a Fords’ pitching change in the bottom of the sixth, Garnet junior Wiley Archibald (Berkeley, Calif. / The College Preparatory School) doubled to the right side and was advanced to second off a fielding error that put Casey on first. Off his second hit of the day, Waterhouse drove in two runs with a double to right center. The scored at the end of the six was 8-4 in favor of the visiting Fords.

Jonny Williams started on the mound for the Fords, improving to 1-1 on the season while Swarthmore sophomore James Bernard (Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select) suffered the loss (0-1) in his first start of the season.

Arichbald and Jimmy Gill ’10 (Lewes, Del. / Cape Henlopen) had two hits each for Swarthmore.

Weather-permitting, the Garnet travel down to Chestertown, Md. this Thursday, April 9. The Centennial Conference game, postponed twice already, is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
