Garnet Sail Past Shoremen
SWARTHMORE, Pa -- The Swarthmore men's tennis team Tuesday afternoon picked up their fourth Centennial Conference win of the season, commandeering a 7-2 win over the Washington College Shoremen at the Mullan Center Tennis.
Swarthmore (6-6, 4-1 CC) powered through doubles play, with senior KevinShaughnessy (South Kingston, R.I. / South Kingston) and freshman Zak Kelm (Shaker Heights, Ohio / University School) overpowering Bears Brian Cedrowski and Andrew Laux 8-2. At No. 3 doubles, freshman duo Max Bressman (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) and Eric Legunn (Waccabuc, N.Y. / John Jay) snatched an 8-6 victory from Michal Switala and Todd Green.
Despite a strong showing at No. 1 singles, the Shoremen (7-5, 2-2 CC) came up short in today’s match, thanks in part to yet another impressive showing by the Garnet freshmen.
The young Garnet came out strong again in singles play, with Kelm claiming his second victory of the night over Washington’s Cedrowski at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-4). At No. 1, Adam Crawford narrowly defeated freshman Stephen Youngblood (Norcross, Ga.) in a nail-biter (6-7, 6-3, 14-12) for Washington. Rounding out the Garnet triumph, seniors Mark Greenburg (Paradise Valley, Ariz. / Phoenix Country Day) and JJ England (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. / Benjamin School) grabbed two more wins for Swarthmore, defeating Washington’s Switala and Brian Danver 6-4, 7-5 and 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
After picking up another regional victory (five on the season), the Garnet men travel to Collegeville this Saturday, April 11, to face off against the Ursinus Bears at 1:00pm.
