Kelm Streaks On, Garnet Fall to Blue Jays
BALTIMORE -- Freshman Zak Kelm and the Swarthmore men's tennis continued to plug through its tough schedule, dropping a 7-2 decision at 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins Sunday afternoon in Centennial action.
Swarthmore, playing at a ranked team for the third consecutive Sunday, dipped to 5-6 overall and suffered its first Conference loss (3-1). The Blue Jays jumped to 6-3 overall and took control of the Centennial with a perfect 4-0 mark.
The top Garnet doubles duo, captain Kevin Shaughnessy ’09 (South Kingston, R.I. / South Kingston) and Kelm (Shaker Heights, Ohio / University School), upset JHU’s All-American doubles team, David Maldow and Andrew Wang (winners of the 2008 Fall ITA Southeast Regionals), by a score of 8-4 in No. 1 action.
Swarthmore’s other win came courtesy of Kelm at No. 3 singles. The freshman won his sixth consecutive match, topping Warren Elgort of JHU in three sets (7-6, 3-6, 6-1).
The Garnet return home on Tuesday, April 7 to host another Centennial match. Washington College is in town and expect the two teams to begin action at 3:30 p.m.
