Eagles Top Garnet
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore women's tennis team battled the #6 University of Mary Washington Eagles Saturday morning to surrender a 9-0 decision at the Mullan Tennis Center.
The Eagles lifted to a 9-7 overall record while the Garnet fell to a 3-5 record.
The no. 1 doubles match-up was the game to watch early during the tie, with each pair refusing to relinquish their service games. Just when it seemed that Mary Washington’s #4 Becky Morse-Karzen and Kate Malpeli might have rattled the Garnet, junior Rachel Wallwork (Washington, D.C. / Georgetown Day) charged to the net to put pressure on the pair or senior Jennie Park (Rockford, Ill. / Guildford) would scrambled to the baseline to return a shot. With the match on the line at 8-7, the Eagles rallied to force a tiebreak. Unfortunately, Wallwork and Park lost the heartbreaker 9-8 (4), and watched their streak end with four wins.
At the no.1 singles spot, #10 Wallwork took on #5 Morse-Karzen. After difficult first set, Wallwork regained her footing and displayed her regular prowess to take the second set. But the long rallies and impressive shots the two exchanged left Wallwork unable to take the match. She fell to a worthy opponent 2-6, 7-6, 7-4.
Park quickly shook off the tough doubles loss to take the early lead in the second singles spot. For much of the first set, each player held serve. Fending off Courtney Goimarac’s effort to force another game, Park took the first set 6-4. But Goimarac’s relentless drive fueled a hard fought comeback, as she took the second set in a tiebreak. With the tie already decided, they forewent the third set and opted for the super tiebreak, which Goimarac took 10-4.
On Wednesday, April 8th, the Garnet finish off their homestand with the Shorewomen of Washington College. The Centennial Conference match-up begins at 3:30 p.m.
