Garnet Kick Mules To Curb
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Chalking up their second shut out in Centennial Conference play, the Swarthmore men's tennis team took to the Mullan Tennis Center courts Wednesday afternoon to romp the Muhlenberg Mules 9-0.
With yet another strong showing from the Garnet freshmen in both singles and doubles play, the Mules (2-2, 0-1 CC) proved no match for Swarthmore (4-5, 2-0 CC).
At No. 1 doubles, freshman Zak Kelm (Shaker Heights, Ohio / University School) and senior Kevin Shaughnessy (South Kingston, R.I. / South Kingston) refused to give up a single point to Mules’ Jordan Rutt and Zach Adler. Senior Mark Greenburg (Paradise Valley, Ariz. / Phoenix Country Day) paired up with freshman Eric Legunn (Waccabuc, N.Y. / John Jay) to chalk up another victory for the Garnet men, defeating Muhlenberg’s Matthew Kral and Wayne Mitchel 8-5.
In singles play, Stephen Youngblood (Norcross, Ga.) came out strong at No. 1, claiming a 6-1, 6-1 win at over his opponent John Osborne. Shuaghnessy faced off against Adler a second time at No. 2 singles and secured an easy 6-2, 6-0 win for the Garnet. The only Garnet sophomore on the courts today, Mark Wee (Syosset, N.Y., Syosset) grabbed another victory at No. 4 singles, overpowering Mitchel 6-1, 6-3. In the No. 6 spot, freshman Max Bressman (Chappaqua, N.Y./ Horace Greeley) swept Muhlenberg’s Kral 6-0, 6-0, rounding out the Garnet’s 9-0 shut out.
This Saturday, the Swarthmore men’s tennis team will travel to Gettysburg, Pa. to take on the Gettysburg Bullets in the Garnet’s third Centennial Conference match of the season.
