Take a Bau, David Lau!
SPRINGFIELD, Pa. -- Swarthmore senior David Lau opened the spring slate with a two-over par 73 Monday afternoon, leading the Garnet to a 309-318 victory over visiting Neumann at the Rolling Green Golf Club.
The Swarthmore duffers, fresh off a weeklong training trip to the Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C., posted its best team score since the final round of the 2007 Centennial Championships (306).
Lau (Hong Kong, China / The Hotchkiss School [CT]) tore around the par-71 lay-out with long drives and accurate iron shots. It was Lau’s first competitive round at the Swarthmore home course since April 9, 2007—the senior captain (right) spent last year studying at Oxford University in England. The score of 73 matches his second-best collegiate score (a 72 his freshman year stands as the low figure) and registered as the low round of the afternoon
Fellow captain Michael Bernasek ’09 (Fairfield, Conn. / Hopkins School) also got the spring season off to a encouraging start, tying his collegiate-best score with a 76 to finish in second. Freshman Paul Weston (Waterbury, Vt. / Harwood Union) also recorded a personal-best in the rolling hills of Delaware County, carding a 79 to tie for third.
The Knights, also making their 2009 debut, were led by Richard Brandel and Shane Howey with 79s.
Swarthmore’s next match is scheduled for next Monday, March 23 at Rolling Green. Eastern University and Philadelphia University of the Sciences will square off with the Garnet at 1:00 p.m.
