Garnet Swat Fords
HAVERFORD, Pa. -- Swarthmore sophomore Kathryn Stockbower marked her 47th game in a row scoring in the double-digits earning her a Centennial Conference record as her team down the Haverford women’s basketball team 41-37 on Saturday afternoon in the Gooding Arena.
Swarthmore ended the regular season with a 13-12 overall record and went 10-8 in the Conference. Haverford fell to a 6-16 overall record and finished 5-13 in the CC.
With Stockbower (Ft. Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) [pictured left] posting team highs of 14 points and 13 rebounds she pasted the previous Centennial record held Julie Anderson (Johns Hopkins – 1997) who had 46 games in a row where she scored in double figures. Sophomore guard Ceylan Bodur (Istanbul, Turkey / Roberts College) also registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while dishing out three helpers to her teammates. Sophomore center Summer Miller-Walfish (San Jose, N.M. / West Las Vegas) swatted nine shots on the afternoon (one shy of tying a career-high).
Haverford was led by senior forward Brittany Lattisaw with a game-high 16 points and collected nine rebounds. Senior center Natalie Richman marked a game high 15 rebounds while adding eight points to the Fords total.
Haverford got the game started scoring the first four points, but at 17:03 Swarthmore Miller-Walfish blocked a shot to give the Garnet possession and sent the ball down the court for Swarthmore’s first points of the game.
Swarthmore took their first lead of the game at 15:02 with 7-6 showing on the board. Haverford quickly took the lead back but after a few back and fourth battles Swarthmore took the advantage (11-10) with 10:51 showing on the clock.
With the clock showing 6:54 Swarthmore began an 11-3 run, in that time the Garnet defense held Haverford to a scoreless four minutes.
After seven lead changes the half ended with Swarthmore up 25-18, leading the way for the Garnet was Stockbower had nine point and six rebounds while senior guard Melissa Grigsby (West Chester, Pa. / West Chester East) added five points. Haverford ended the half with two players totaling six points from Lattisaw and Richman. The Fords offense had the advantage of eight points off turnovers while Swarthmore only converted four.
Swarthmore had their largest lead of the game (11 points) with 16:45 remaining in the game with a score of 31-20.
Haverford hit the floor running in the second half they started to chip away at the Swarthmore 11 point lead. With less than two minutes remaining the Ford tied the game (the first time since 9:33 in the first half) with 37 points for each sideline.
Despite the Ford’s rally Swarthmore finished the game up four points ahead with 41-37 glowing on the score board.
