Strong Start to Season
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The women's tennis team opened up the spring sports schedule for Swarthmore on Saturday defeating New York University by the score of 5-4 at the Michael Mullan Tennis Center Saturday morning.
Swarthmore junior Rachel Wallwork (Washington, D.C. / Georgetown Day) and senior Jennie Park (Rockford, Ill. / Guilford) won their first doubles match 8-3 to get the Garnet on the board. Freshman Rosie DuBrin (Rochester, N.Y. / Pittsford Sutherland) and sophomore Luann Cignavitch (Charleston, S.C. / Porter-Gaud School) also won their opening doubles competition 8-4 to give Swarthmore two of the three doubles matches.
The Garnet (1-0) won the top three singles matches to put away the Violets (0-1) early making the victory certain before the final three matches.
Defending Centennial Conference Player of the Year Wallwork picked up where she left off defeating her opponent in the marquee match-up 6-1, 6-2.
Park and DuBrin also were perfect on the day winning their singles matches by the counts of 6-4, 6-1 and 7-5, 6-3 respectively.
Swarthmore takes to the court again next Sunday, March 1st when Salisbury heads up for a 1:00 p.m. match.
