Bears Unable to Fish Out Garnet
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Senior Doug Gilchrist-Scott and junior Casey Osborn were triple-winners while Allison Bishop '11, Tim Brevart '12, August Dinwiddie '12, Stephen Shymon '09, and Stephanie Su '11 won two events each as the Swarthmore swim teams got back on track with a sweep of Ursinus in Centennial dual-meet action Tuesday night. The Garnet men cruised to a 162-87 victory while the women scratched out a 138-119 win.
Osborn (Albany, Calif. / Albany) continued her strong first-semester showing, sweeping the butterfly events. She posted a time of 2:22.40 in the 200-yard event early in the evening and then came back with a 1:03.04 clocking to win the 100-yard race. Osborn caught her breath during the men’s 100 fly and then jumped right back in the pool, leading a Swarthmore sweep of the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:21.59. Su (Parsippany Hills, N.J. / Parsippany Hills) followed close behind with a time of 2:22.63 with freshman Rosalie Lawrence (Santa Cruz, Calif. / Pacific Collegiate School) in third in 2:24.46.
Su also breezed to a four-second victory in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.69) while classmate Bishop (Macungie, Pa. / Emmaus) found herself atop the scoreboard in the 500-yard freestyle (5:36.30). Swarthmore showed its freestyle prowess in the sprint events as freshman Naomi Glassman (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) out-touched her Bears’ opponent to win the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 26:58 while sophomore Chelsea Brett (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Trinity) cruised to a win in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.47) with classmate Melinda Neal (Austin, Texas) taking second place.
The established Swarthmore senior men paired with their talented first-year teammates to give the Garnet an easy win after several slim defeats at the start of the season.
Gilchrist-Scott (Canton, Ohio / Hoover) dominated the backstroke events, winning both the 100-yard (55.96) and the 200-yard (2:04.29) events. Shymon (Encinitas, Calif. / University of San Diego) rolled to victory in the 200-yard freestyle and later in the meet, secured a win in the 200 IM by nearly two seconds (2:05.29).
The Garnet men plowed through the freestyle sprint events to gain control of the meet. Brevart (Swarthmore, Pa. / Strath Haven) touched the wall first in the 100-yard freestyle (51.41) with senior Guy Seaton (Jacksonville, Fla. / Stanton College Prep) close behind in second (52.18). Fellow first-years Dinwiddie (Morris, Conn. / Holy Cross) and Neil Palmer (Tecumseh, Mich. / Tecumseh) posted another Garnet 1-2 finish, coming in the 50 freestyle with respective times of 23.00 and 23.89.
Another pair of Garnet wins came as sophomore Derrick Kao (Santa Monica, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake) outpaced his Ursinus counterpart in the 1000 freestyle with a winning time of 11:03.60 and classmate Sterling Satterfield (Durham, N.C. / Charles E. Jordan) rolled to a win in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.37).
