No 17 Swarthmore Caps Best Regular Season With Win Over Fords

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Garnet men's soccer team needed just one goal, a header from senior forward Evan Nesterak, to top long-time rival Haverford,1-0, in front of a packed house at Clothier Field.

Swarthmore claims its 14th victory (ninth consecutive) in the regular season, both school records. The Garnet (14-2-1) complete the regular season with an 8-1 record in the Centennial, also a program-best mark.

Swarthmore captain Jeff Kushner (Norristown, Pa. / Methacton) sent a long free kick to the top of the Haverford box at the start of the second half.  Nesterak jumped over a Haverford defender at 54:24 and flicked a header into the net for his eighth score of the season.

Freshman goalie David D'Annunzio needed just one save to record his sixth shutout of the season, which tied him with three other Garnet goalies for the fourth most shutouts in a single season.

Swarthmore out-shot the Fords (3-10-3, 0-7-2 CC) 28-4 in front of a 822 fans on an unseasonably warm evening.

The Garnet will host the 2008 Centennial Conference Men's Soccer Championships next weekend, Nov. 8-9. Complete information to be released on Monday.
