Lazarus Sets New Standard
MOOSIC, Pa. -- Garnet sophomore Jeffrey Lazarus set a new standard in Swarthmore golf during the first round of the Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational, posting a one-under 70 at the Glenmaura National Golf Club Sunday afternoon.
Swarthmore is in ninth position with a team score of 333, trailing the leader McDaniel (307).
Lazarus (Woodcliff, N.J. / Pascack Hills) shot a one-over 36 on the front nine going up Montage Mountain and then posted a two-under 34 in the valley at the par-71, 6339-yard course for the low round of the day. He bested the previous school record of 71, held by Eric Zwick ’07 and Matt Kaufman ’02. This is the third time Lazarus has broken 80 this season, coming at a great time as the Garnet are preparing for the Centennial Conference Championships next weekend.
Senior Darren Johnson (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County) was next on the scoreboard for Swarthmore, carding a 79 while Kelly Schoolmaster ’10 (Irmo, S.C. / Irmo) posted a 90. Seniors Armand Russo (Bloomfield, N.J. / Bloomfield) and Michael Johns rounded out the scoring with a 94 and 95, respectively.
Team and full scores are unavailable at this time.
Day two of the Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational starts bright and early for the Garnet. Tee time on Monday morning is set for 7:00 a.m.
