Top Doubles Pair Collect Win, Garnet Fall to #15 Blue Jays
SWARTHMORE, Pa -- Despite a hard fought battle, the Garnet men's tennis team fell 7-2 to the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, the first-pace team in the Centennial Conference and ranked #15 nationally.
Senior Jonathan Lo (Honolulu, Hawaii / Iolani School) and junior Kevin Shaughnessy (South Kingston, R.I. / South Kingston) battled hard for a win at No. 1 doubles, ultimately defeating their Blue Jays opponents, Casey Blythe and Joe Vasoontara, 8-6. This win marked the highlight of doubles play, as Blythe and Vasoontara, ranked #5 in doubles in the Atlantic South, were unable to withstand Lo and Shaughnessy’s onslaught.
In singles play, the Blue Jays again took all but one of the matches, with David Maldow chalking up a 6-2, 6-4 win against Lo at No.1 singles and Vasoontra commanding a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Shaughnessy at No. 2.
Garnet junior Marc Greenburg (Paradise Valley, Ariz. / Phoenix Country Day), however, proved too much for Blue Jay Peter Vale, picking up the second win for the Garnet in a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles. Having lost his first set, freshman Mark Wee (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset) almost snatched the second from Blythe, but it was Blythe who took the set and the match in a 6-3, 6-5 victory for Johns Hopkins.
This coming Wednesday, the Garnet will face off against Haverford in the regular-season finale at 4:00 p.m. on the Faulkner Courts (weather permitting).
