Mules Top Garnet
ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The Muhlenberg Mules (14-13, 5-5 CC) sealed the second game of their Centennial Conference series with an 8-2 win over the Swarthmore Garnet (8-13, 2-8 CC) at the Ceder Creek Field on Friday afternoon.
The Garnet evened the score to one run a piece in the second inning when third baseman Conor Casey ’09 (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) got the run started while doubling to center field. First baseman Matt Corso ’10 (Paramus, N.J. / Paramus) then grounded out to second to send Casey home.
In the fourth inning Swarthmore knotted the score at 2-2 when catcher Wiley Archibald ’10 (Berkeley, Calif. / The College Preparatory School) scored off an error by the Muhlenberg short stop. Archibald had hit a single up the right side before scoring and was advanced to second off a single from Corso.
Muhlenberg took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth when earning two hits and continued to bat well when they score an addition three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make the score 7-2 in favor of the home team. The Mules finalized the score in the eighth when they scored their last run to make the score 8-2.
Garnet freshman Andy Allen (Manchester, Maine / St. Dominic) started on the mound for the Garnet pitching five innings while picking up the loss.
Short stop Thomas Nakamura ’10 (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) went 3-for-4 at the plate while registering two put outs in the field.
The Garnet will continue their conference schedule when they return to the Clothier Fields to host McDaniel for a double-header on Saturday, April 12. First pitch is schedule for 12:30 p.m.
