Shaughnessy Picks Up Two Victories
CHESTERTOWN, Mary. -- Swarthmore junior Kevin Shaughnessy won both matches Sunday afternoon as the Garnet men's tennis team fell to Washington (Md.), ranked 18th in the Atlantic South region, by a score of 6-3 in Centennial action inside the Johnson Lifetime Fitness Center.
The Garnet, ranked 12th in the Atlantic South region, lost its first Centennial Conference match, dipping to a 3-1 record (3-7 overall). The Shoremen remain undefeated with an overall record of 11-0 and 4-0 in the Centennial.
Shaughnessy (South Kingston, R.I. / South Kingston) combined with senior Jonathan Lo (Honolulu, Hawaii / Ioulai) to give the Garnet an easy 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. The Shoremen picked up the other two doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
Shaughnessy dropped his first set to Michal Switala of Washington 6-3 but came out with a purpose in the second set, earning a 6-3 win. Shaughnessy kept his momentum rolling, breezing to a 10-2 in the third-set tiebreaker.
Sophomore Justin diFeliciantonio (Columbus, Ga. / Hardaway) collected Swarthmore’s other point, claiming victory at No. 6 singles when his Washington opponent retired, down 6-4, 2-0.
Swarthmore welcomes Gettysburg College to campus this Saturday, April 12 in a 1:00 p.m. match that, weather permitting, will take place on the College Avenue Courts.
