Devils Upend Swat Lacrosse
SWARTHMORE, PA -- The visiting Red Devils scored three unanswered goals in the fourth period as Dickinson men's lacrosse came from behind to defeat Swarthmore 7-5 on Saturday afternoon on Clothier Field.
Junior attack Stelios Wilson (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) led the Swarthmore offense with two goals, his tenth and eleventh of the season, and one assist. Senior defender Drew Bonessa (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shady Side Academy) picked up nine ground balls while classmate Dan Sartori (Darien, Conn. / Darien) gobbled up seven.
Dickinson (6-1, 1-0 CC) got on the board first, as senior midfielder Jon Schneider (Lutherville, Md. / Park/Bucknell) scored off a feed from junior midfielder Casey Finklestein (Owings Mill, Md. / McDonough) with 9:36 remaining in the first quarter. Swarthmore countered with an unassisted goal by sophomore attack Tyler Bradshaw (Marietta, Ga. / Lassister) just over two minutes later. Dickinson sophomore attack Ted Sirvaitis (Greenwich, CT / Greenwich) then scored a pair of goals to give the Red Devils a 3-1 advantage going into the second quarter.
Wilson scored his first goal of the afternoon with 6:53 remaining in the half off a feed from Bradshaw, as Swarthmore closed the gap to within one, trailing at the half 3-2.
The teams traded goals in the third, as junior midfielder Will Predun (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. / Cold Spring Harbor) tied the game with an unassisted tally just over six minutes into the quarter to tie the game at 3-3. Dickinson freshman attack Jeff Hartman (Charlotte, N.C. / Collegiate) scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Chris Dodson (Bethesda, Md. / Landon) to give the lead back to the Red Devils.
The Garnet (4-2, 0-2 CC) came out swinging in the fourth, as Wilson scored his second goal of the afternoon just over a minute into the quarter, and fed sophomore attack Gavin Musynske (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park) for a goal a minute later. On that goal, Wilson picked up a ground ball at midfield, carried the ball into the offensive zone, and zipped a pass to Musynske, who put it home to give Swarthmore a 5-4 lead.
Dickinson was able to take back control of the game, as Hartman scored his second goal of the afternoon with 12:11 remaining in the game to tie things up, and Schneider also tallied his second score of the contest with 5:04 left to give Dickinson the lead. The Garnet defense picked up the pressure in the waning minutes of the game, trying to force a Dickinson turnover, but senior defender Matt Kogelschatz (Baltimore, Md. / St. Paul’s) fired a clear from midfield that somehow found the back of the net to ice the win for the Red Devils.
Freshman midfielder Pat Curley (Ellicot City, Md. / Ellicott City) gave Dickinson an offensive advantage by winning 12 of the 14 face-offs he took, while also picking up nine ground balls.
Senior goaltender Frank Mazzucco (Redding, Conn. / Joel Barlow) made eight saves in net for Swarthmore and also scooped up four ground balls.
The Garnet will return to Clothier Field on Wednesday night when they take on Conference foe Franklin & Marshall at 7:00 p.m.
