Garnet Bear Down in 9-0 Shut Out
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- In their second-ever Centennial Conference match, the Swarthmore men's tennis team overwhelmed the Ursinus College Bears in a 9-0 shut out.
The Garnet cruised past the Bears in all three doubles matches, dropping only two games in all of doubles play, with No. 3 doubles picking up an 8-0 win. Senior Jonathan Lo (Honolulu, Hawaii / Iolani School) and junior Kevin Shaughnessy (South Kingston, RI / South Kingston), playing No. 1 doubles, rolled over Ursinus’s Joseph Ellwood and Phil Ricci in an 8-1 victory. Lo and Shaughnessy made an equally impressive showing in their No.1 and No. 2 singles matches, handily defeating Ursinus’s Jason Zerbe and Josh Hollaman in two 6-1, 6-0 triumphs.
Rounding out the Garnet’s clean sweep, JJ England (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) sailed past Greg Lewis in a 6-0, 6-0 match at No. 3. Freshman Mark Wee (Syosset, NY, Syosset), chalked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ursinus’s Kevin Dean at No. 4, while junior Marc Greenburg (Paradise Valley, Ariz. / Phoenix Country Day), and sophomore Justin diFeliciantonio (Columbus, Ga. / Hardaway) closed out the Garnet’s final 9-0 score with hard-hitting wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
The Garnet will hit the courts again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in the Mullan Center, taking on the Dickinson College Red Devils in their third Centennial Conference match of the season.
