Garnet Could Not Tame Nittany Lions

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Penn State Berks (4-8) baseball team took advantage of solid hitting during second to picked up a 7-5 win over Swarthmore (6-4) on a blistering cold Tuesday afternoon at Clothier Fields.

The Garnet fought back to tie the Nittany Lions in the bottom of the fourth. To start the rally Swarthmore third basemen Conor Casey ’09 (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) ran home off a wild pitch to bring the deficit to 4-2, before outfielder Ben Schneiderman ’11 (Easton, Pa. / Easton) rounded to home off a Nittany Lion error. Senior outfielder Scott Dalane (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon Township), who was 3-for-4 for the afternoon, hit a single to drive in left fielder James Bernard ’11 (Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select) to tie the game.

Despite the quick defense shown by Casey throwing a double play to second baseman Kevin Kooi ’09 (Lafayette, Calif. / College Preparatory School) in the top of the eighth inning, the Garnet could not stop the Nittany Lions from scoring four more runs to earn the win.

Freshman Andy Allen (Machester, Maine / St. Dominic) started on the mound, pitching four innings for the Garnet, he struck out four batters and only gave up three hits. Zach Sinemus ’10 (Short Hills, N.J. / Millburn) relieved Adam Koshin ’11 (Oakland, Calif. / Head Royce School) after three innings to finish up the last two. Sinemus only allowed three hits and one run.

The Garnet return to baseball action on Thursday, March 20 when they travel to Philadelphia Biblical, first pitch is schedule for 3:00 pm.
