Lewis, Miller Earn All America Status
OXFORD, Ohio -- Swarthmore sophomore Anne Miller and senior Jennie Lewis earned All-America honors while breaking College and Centennial Conference records at the 2008 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships on March 15-16 at the Corwin Nixon Aquatic Center on the campus of Miami (OH) University.
Swarthmore collected 28 team points to place 30th out of 52 teams participating, its highest finish at nationals since 1997 when four women attended, and 1996, when seven women participated.
Miller (Buffalo, N.Y. / Buffalo Seminary), an All-American in the 100 and 200 butterfly in 2007, repeated in the same events this year, placing higher in both and highlighted by her record-setting performance in the 200 fly finals on Saturday night. The sophomore posted the best finish ever by a Swarthmore swimmer at the national meet, earning the silver medal with a College and Centennial-record time of 2:02.44. She is the first Swarthmore swimmer to medal, finishing just .95 seconds behind Marika Ross from Middlebury and 2.29 seconds off the Division III record.
Both Miller and Lewis swam in the 100 consolation finals on Friday night with Miller finishing 10th (57.58) and Lewis close behind in 13th (57.89) to receive All-America honorable mention status.
Lewis (Darien, Conn. / Darien) clocked a time of 57.36 in the preliminaries of the 100-yard butterfly, setting a new college record previously held by both Lewis and Miller set at the Centennial Championships in February at Franklin & Marshall College.
This is Lewis’ first NCAA appearance and first All-America placing. Together with Miller bringing head coach Sue Davis’ total to 40 All-Americans (men and women) in her 34 years at Swarthmore.
