Garnet Win Big with Lucky 13

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore (2-2) used a last-minute goal to win, 13-12, over Gwynedd-Mercy (0-3) at the 2008 Women’s Lacrosse Tri-Co Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Swarthmore got on the board first when freshman Emily Evans (Atlanta, Ga. / North Springs) scored at 28:47, which was followed by back-to-back goals from Gwynedd-Mercy to make the score 2-1. Evans battled back with a second unassisted goal to even the knot the score at 23:57. Garnet freshman Amy Vachal (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) scored back-to-back unassisted goals to send Swarthmore ahead 4-3 at 13:39.

The score evened up again at 4-4 before Vachal completed her third hat-trick of the season with 10:13 remaining on the clock when she received a pass from Marissa Schaffer ’09 (Moreland Hill, Ohio / Laurel School). Swarthmore extended their 8-4 lead before the half, getting two goals from both midfielder Anna de Regt ’09 (Redmond, Wash. / Overlake School) and Schaffer.

At the start of the second half, de Regt received a pass from Evans to make the score 9-4. The Griffins fought back earning three goals to get within one. Garnet sophomore Abbe Muller (West Hartford, Conn. / Conard) scored at 17:25 before de Regt completed her trio of goals for the afternoon, making the score 11-8.

Gwynedd-Mercy had their second scoring surge of four goals to even the score at 11-11. During this run, Griffin senior Meghan Volz (Warminster, Pa. / Upper Moreland) registered the game’s third hat-trick. The Garnet took the lead with Evans scoring her third goal of the afternoon, before Griffin freshman Kristie Pollocl (Kennett Square, Pa. / Unionville) evened the score with 4:02 remaining.

Swarthmore took the final lead when Vachal scored her fourth goal of the game with 45 seconds left, to make the score 13-12.

Garnet netminder Susannah Blair ’08 ( Princeton, N.J. / Princeton Day) picked up her second win while collecting 11 saves. Griffin freshman Trisha Anthony (Allentown, Pa. / Allentown) had 16 saves between the posts.

Swarthmore will play their second game of the Tri-Co Invitational on Sunday, March 16th hosting Moravian College at 4:00 p.m.
