Monarchs Edge Garnet Softball

FAYETVILLE, N.C. -- The Swarthmore softball team opened the 2008 season against the two-time USA South Conference champion Methodist University, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to the Monarchs (12-4) Tuesday afternoon.

Methodist, participants in the 2006 and 2007 NCAA Division III Tournament, claimed game one 5-0 and then edged past the Garnet 4-2 in the second contest.

Swarthmore freshman Maggie Vizcarra (Long Beach, Calif. / Long Beach) had the big hit of the afternoon for the Garnet, lining a one-out single through the left side, driving in the first two runs of her collegiate career in the sixth inning of game two.

The Garnet also got two hits from junior Lauren Walker (Fallston, Mary. / Hotchkiss School) while classmate Christine Sendelsky (Edison, N.J. / John Stevens), senior Katherine Gold (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill East), sophomore Kathryn Riley (Dagsboro, Del. / Indian River) and freshman Melissa Emmerson (Ringwood, N.J. / Lakeland Regional) added base hits.

Swarthmore continues its North Carolina road trip on Wednesday, taking on Peace in a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
