Rangers Hunt Down Win
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Drew Rangers got to an early jump in the first half en route to a 19-10 women's lacrosse victory over Swarthmore early Tuesday morning. The Garnet evened out their record at 1-1, while the Rangers kept their winning streak alive at 4-0.
The Rangers took a quick lead in the first ten minutes of the half scoring the first three goals of the game. Garnet attack Marissa Schaffer ’09 (Moreland Hill, Ohio / Laurel School) received a pass from Emily Evans ’11 (Atlanta, Ga. / North Springs) to put Swarthmore on the board at 19:52 to make the score 1-3. Swarthmore came within one when senior Megan Sanborn (Lewiston, N.Y. / Nichols School) assisted Kelsey Hatzell ’09 (Havertown, Pa. / Havertown) at 18:49. Freshman Amy Vachel (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) started her offensive surge of the afternoon with less than five minutes on the clock when she score an unassisted goal for the Garnet, followed by another unassisted goal from Sanborn.
Drew picked up hat tricks from freshman Stacie Brown (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Calverton School), freshman Sloane Coles (The Plains, Va. / Foxcroft School) and senior Lindsey Perno (Medford, N.J. / Shawnee) during the first half. Perno took advantage of a last minute free position to make the score 13-4 going into the second half.
Vachal completed her first career hat-trick, scoring a team-high four times, during her three back-to-back goals in a period of less than three minutes. Sophomore midfielder Abbe Muller (West Hartford, Conn. / Conard) picked up two goals in the final minutes of the game but it was not enough to surge ahead of the Rangers.
Senior Susannah Blair (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton Day ) played the full game in the net for Garnet and collected 12 saves, two ground balls and had two caused turnovers, while sophomore Stef Rutkowski (Wilmington, Del. / Tower Hill School) had 11 saves for the Rangers.
The Garnet play the last game of their trip to San Antonio on Wednesday, March 12 against St. Mary’s College of Maryland at 2:30 p.m.
