Garnet Fall in Hit-Fest
ALLENTOWN, Pa.-- The Garnet rapped out a season-high 15 hits in a 16-6 Centennial defeat at the hands of the Muhlenberg Mules Tuesday afternoon at Cedarcreek Field.
Swarthmore (2-17 overall, 0-9 CC) was led by junior Scott Dalane who went 3-for-4 with a run scored and sophomore Conor Casey (3-for-5, run scored, RBI). Freshman outfielder Jimmy Gill picked up two hits and two RBIs while senior Sammy Faeder contributed a double, a single, and scored a run.
The Garnet drew first blood when Dalane cracked a one-out single and moved over to second on junior Travis Allen's sacrifice bunt. Gill picked up his first RBI of the day by shooting a ball through the left side of the infield, scoring Dalane.
The Mules (6-14 overall, 2-5 CC) grabbed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Swarthmore rallied to tie the game in the third. Faeder led off with a single to right, moved up on a Dalane bunt and came home on a double by Allen.
Muhlenberg chased Swarthmore starter Sean Varsalona (1-4) with four runs in the third and then five more in the fourth, opening an 11-2 margin.
Swarthmore continued to fight, getting back four runs in the top of the eighth. Junior Justin Chen had the big hit of the frame, drilling a two-run single through the left side with the bags full.
