Dragons, Cold Wind Dominate Swarthmore Open
SPRINGFIELD, Pa. -- Penn senior Patrick Cooper navigated the windy conditions at Rolling Green Golf Club to shoot a one-over 72 to tie with two other individuals at the 2007 Swarthmore Open Monday afternoon. The Drexel golf team captured top team honors with a total score of 310, followed by the Penn "B" team (314), host Swarthmore (333), Neumann (335) and Dickinson (361).
Cooper posted two birdies on the front nine for a one-under 35 and shot a 37 on the back, tying Drexel's Joe April (38-34) and Myles Vlachos (35-37) for the low round off the match. Radnor product Nick Ryder, playing No. 1, posted a four-over 75 (39-36) for Penn.
This edition of the Swarthmore Open was played in windy conditions with the temperatures struggling to reach 45 degrees, even as the sun shone through the drifting clouds.
Garnet freshman Jeffrey Lazarus overcame an early triple with four birdies to card an eight-over 79, finishing tied for eighth--the top Division III competitor in the field.
Swarthmore senior Eric Zwick posted an 82 and classmate Zach Moody carded an unlucky 86 while Michael Bernasek '09 (86) and David Lau '09 (89) completed the scoring for the Garnet
The Garnet stay local with their next match, traveling to Spring Haven Country Club in Wallingford, Pa. to take part in the Tom Ruggieri Invitational II on Tuesday, April 10 at 1:00 p.m.
