Division II Rangers Slip Past Swarthmore
DENVER, Colo. --Sophomore Marissa Schaffer scored four goals and freshman goalie Allison Grein made 10 saves as the Swarthmore women's lacrosse team lost its first game of the season, a 14-12 decision to Division II-opponent Regis College Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers (4-3) were led by Jen Gunlikson with a game-high six goals while Amanda Ponzer added three scores. Regis led 8-6 at halftime with both teams recording 13 shots.
Swarthmore controlled 11 draws to Regis' five, led by sophomore Anna de Regt's four draw controls. The Garnet out-shot the Rangers 30-24 on the afternoon while Regis led the ground ball category, 36-26.
It was the second four-goal game of the season for Schaffer, who took eight shots and converted her only free-position attempt. Grein replaced Swarthmore starting goalie Susannah Blair, who developed an injury ten minutes into the game and posted a career-best 10 saves.
Garnet senior Athena Samaras notched her first hat-trick of the season while Megan Sanborn '08 and de Regt chipped in two scores.
The Garnet (3-1) will make their 2007 home debut on Thursday, March 22 when second-ranked Gettysburg comes to Clothier Field for a 5:00 p.m. contest.
