Swarthmore Sweeps Hood, Gold Named All-Tournament

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Garnet junior Katherine Gold had five hits and was named to the All-Tournament team as Swarthmore swept a pair of games from Hood on the final day of competition at the Smash Hit Spring Break Tournament hosted by Savannah College of Art and Design Thursday.  Swarthmore (5-2) won the morning affair 4-1 and then came back to rout the Blazers 10-0 in the afternoon.

Gold sizzled in the first game, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs.  Senior captain Kelly Siano added three hits, including a double and run scored while freshman Kathryn Riley was 2-for3 with her second home run of the young season.

Riley posted another commanding performance on the mound, limiting Hood (a participant in the 2006 NCAA Division III Tournament) to one unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts for her second complete-game victory.

The afternoon contest between the two schools was a truncated affair—the Garnet offense

Siano went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs while Gold added a 1-for-2 effort with an RBI and two runs scored.  Riley was 1-for-1 officially after getting hit by a pitch twice while contributing a double and two runs.

Junior Emily Walz tossed five shutout innings while holding the Blazers to three hits for her first win of the season.

Swarthmore is scheduled to play its home opener on Tuesday, March 20 at 3:00 p.m. against Wesley (DE).
