Riley Goes Yard at Smash Hit Spring Break Tournament

SAVANNAH, Ga.  -- Swarthmore freshman Kathryn Riley had three hits, including her first career home run, as the Garnet dropped a pair of games Tuesday at the 2007 Smash Hit Spring Break Tournament hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design.  2006 NCAA Tournament participant Hood downed the Garnet 4-3 in the morning and then Chowan topped Swarthmore 10-5 in the afternoon.

Hood (2-3) picked up three runs in the first inning off Garnet starter Marianne Klingaman, but Riley laced a line drive over the fence in right-centerfield to cut the deficit to 3-1.  The Garnet tied the game, 3-3, in the second inning when Melissa LaVan '07 drove in classmate Kelly Siano and then scored on a Lauren Walker '09 single up the middle.  Hood plated the game-winning run in the fourth when starting pitcher Jamie Gardner helped her cause with an RBI single.

The second game saw the Chowan offense get five runs in the second inning and four more in the third.  Swarthmore showed some offensive firepower of its own with a four-run fifth frame, fueled by a two-run single off the bat of Riley.

The Garnet were led by a 2-for-4 effort by Riley while Walker contributed two hits in three trips to the plate.

Swarthmore (2-2) continues action at the Smash Hit Spring Break Tournament against Missouri Baptist and Centennial-rival Haverford on Wed., March 14.
